About RCF
The Rose Craig Foundation was established in 1999 in honor of Rosemarie
Lillian Randazzo Craig. Rose battled a rare cancer for more than two
years
before she passed away in September 2000. Despite the difficulty of those
years, Rose was able to enjoy much of what she'd always enjoyed in life --
spending happy times with her family and friends. The quality of her life was
greatly enhanced because of a portable infusion pump that provided
her with
a steady dose of pain-reducing medication without limiting her mobility
or
activity. Without that piece of equipment, her last year of life would
have been considerably more restricted and certainly more painful.
To the surprise of her family, and
the chagrin of her doctors and nurses,
obtaining a portable infusion pump for Rose’s use was challenging due to
shortages of these pumps and other medical equipment in Ontario hospitals.
No government funds are currently available in Ontario to provide hospitals
and
patients with sufficient and up-to-date medical equipment. Healthcare
providers rely on donations from the community and public support to ensure
patient access to necessary medical equipment.
The Rose Craig
Foundation was established to help ensure that other
people facing serious illness could have access to medical equipment
that
minimizes their pain and maximizes the quality of their lives.
While
much work remains to be done to ensure that persons with serious illnesses have
access to medical equipment that can enhance their quality of life, the Rose
Craig Foundation has begun to make progress toward
that goal in Canada and in the
United States as well. Because of the
tremendous outpouring of support for the Rose Craig
Foundation in its
inaugural year, the foundation was able to provide in excess of $10,000
in
funds and equipment to the Hotel Dieu Hospital in St. Catharines,
Ontario
during 2000.
Our thanks to all who supported RCF's mission to
enhance end of life care!
